Guwahati, Dec 22 (PTI) Assam has been placed on “high alert” following a fresh wave of unrest in neighbouring Bangladesh, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Monday.
Speaking to reporters, Sarma said the state government is closely monitoring the situation across the border. “We have seen that in Bangladesh, Hindus are being subjected to atrocities and burnt alive… those currently in power in Bangladesh have been talking about including northeast India in their country,” he claimed.
The CM also noted that people from Bangladesh have entered Assam at different times, adding that the state is “full of these people.” “We have to be vigilant and must keep a sharp eye on the developments in that country,” he said.
Last week, Sarma had alleged that “Bangladeshi elements” have repeatedly suggested that northeast India should be merged with Bangladesh, calling such claims “irresponsible and dangerous” and asserting that India will not remain silent. “India is a very big country, a nuclear nation and the fourth largest economy of the world. How can Bangladesh even think about it?” he asked.
The unrest in Bangladesh follows the death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent figure in anti-government protests that contributed to the collapse of the Sheikh Hasina government.
Authorities in Assam’s Cachar district have imposed prohibitory orders along the India-Bangladesh border to prevent illegal movement and potential law and order threats, officials said.
