The Brahma Rathotsava at the historic Sri Kadu Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple in the Malleswaram locality of Bengaluru was celebrated with vibrant devotion and strong public participation on Monday, February 16, 2026. The annual chariot festival, organised the day after Maha Shivaratri, drew devotees and cultural groups, reflecting the tradition’s enduring community pull.
Devotees Gather Amidst Traditional Splendour
The Brahma Rathotsava commenced with the ceremonial pulling of the ornately decorated chariot (ratha) carrying the utsava murti (processional idol) of Lord Mallikarjuna Swamy. Crowds lined the streets of Malleswaram, chanting hymns and pulling the chariot with traditional ropes, a symbolic act believed to usher divine grace and blessings into the community. Participants dressed in vibrant traditional attire added to the festival’s colourful atmosphere.
Temple authorities said preparations for the Rathotsava began weeks in advance, with arrangements for crowd management, safety, and smooth procession routes. Devotees from across South India and neighbouring regions were seen participating wholeheartedly in the festival, reflecting the temple’s wide cultural appeal.
Rituals and Cultural Programmes
The Brahma Rathotsava is traditionally held a day after Maha Shivaratri, the night dedicated to Lord Shiva, and this year was no exception. On February 15, the temple hosted special Jalabhisheka (ritual bathing of the linga) through the night, attracting devotees who queued for darshan and blessings. The next day’s Rathotsava built on this devotional momentum, combining ritual celebration with cultural displays.
In addition to the main chariot procession, cultural troupes performed classical and folk arts, including percussion ensembles and dance demonstrations, on temporary stages erected near the temple precincts. Community volunteers organised annadanam (free food distribution) and helped ensure senior citizens and children could participate comfortably.
Community Engagement and Temple Trust Initiatives
The festival committee also emphasised social and community aspects of the celebration. Alongside devotional rituals, outreach efforts such as medical camps, distribution of prasadam, and cultural workshops for children on temple heritage were highlighted as part of the broader Rathotsava spirit.
Security, Traffic and Logistics
City authorities and temple security coordinated to manage the large crowds, implementing traffic diversions and public safety measures around the procession route. Barricades, volunteer stewards, and first-aid stations were placed along key stretches, helping ensure a peaceful and orderly celebration.
Devotee Feedback and Significance
Devotees described this year’s Rathotsava as spiritually uplifting. Many expressed that pulling the chariot through the temple’s historic neighbourhood, surrounded by chants, bells, and the rhythmic thrum of traditional drums, was an unforgettable experience. The Brahma Rathotsava at Sri Kadu Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple continues to be a symbol of communal harmony, faith-based celebration, and preservation of cultural tradition in Bengaluru’s religious calendar.
