The first week of April brings a mixed theatrical slate across Hollywood and Indian cinema, with animation, romance, sports drama, thrillers and regional entertainers all arriving within a packed few days. While the release calendar is not spread evenly across the whole week, April 1, April 2 and April 3 carry the biggest titles in theatres.

April 1, 2026: Mario heads back to the big screen

The biggest Hollywood release of the week is The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which is officially set to open in theatres on April 1, 2026. The animated film expands the Mario universe beyond the Mushroom Kingdom and is likely to be the family audience’s main draw at the start of the week.

April 2, 2026: Malayalam and Kannada films bring rooted stories

Malayalam cinema gets Vaazha II: Biopic of a Billion Bros on April 2. Reports and listings describe it as a continuation of the first film’s coming-of-age energy, again exploring friendship, youthful nostalgia and the pressures young men face while navigating adulthood.

Also arriving on April 2 is the Kannada film Naanu Karunakara, described in ticketing listings as a family drama about a middle-class father struggling to fulfil his child’s simple dream. Its blend of emotion, comedy and everyday family situations gives the midweek lineup a softer, more rooted tone.

April 3, 2026: Friday turns into the week’s busiest release day

Friday, April 3, is where the slate gets crowded. Among the most prominent releases is The Drama, the A24 film starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, officially dated for April 3, 2026. That gives the week a notable international prestige title alongside the commercial releases hitting Indian screens.

Telugu star Sharwanand’s Biker is also set for April 3 and is being promoted as India’s first motocross movie. The film arrives as a pan-India sports-action release and has already generated attention around Sharwanand’s physical transformation and the film’s racing backdrop.

Tamil cinema will see multiple releases on the same day. Kaalidas 2, directed by Sri Senthil and starring Bharath, is confirmed for April 3, while Leader, directed by R. S. Durai Senthilkumar and fronted by Legend Saravanan, is also set to arrive that day after release-date reshuffles.

Also in the Tamil lineup is Maragatha Malai, directed by S. Lathha and starring Santhosh Prathap and Deepshika Umapathy, with listings showing an April 3 theatrical release. Another title joining the Friday crowd is Neelira, a war drama set in 1988 Sri Lanka, which has also been slated for April 3.

In Marathi cinema, Super Duperr is also lined up for April 3, with ticketing platforms listing it as a comedy-drama/family entertainer. That makes Friday one of the busiest release days of the week across languages.

A week shaped by variety

What makes this week interesting is not one single dominant genre, but the variety on offer. A major animated global franchise, a star-led romance drama, a motocross film, Tamil thrillers and action dramas, and rooted Malayalam, Kannada and Marathi stories all share space in the same release frame.

From galaxies and game-world nostalgia to family struggles, thrillers and regional storytelling, the March 30 to April 5 window offers a little bit of everything for theatre audiences. The biggest rush clearly comes on April 3, but the week as a whole reflects the range that defines the current theatrical landscape.
