The perennial debate surrounding Salman Khan’s impartiality as host of India’s most-watched reality show has once again taken center stage. In an exclusive interview with India Today, Bigg Boss 19 producer Rishi Negi from Banijay Asia and EndemolShine India has addressed long-standing fan accusations and shed light on the collaborative process between production and the superstar host.
How Salman Forms His Opinions
With each season of Bigg Boss, discussions inevitably centre on accusations of host bias, with viewers frequently noting that Khan appears to favour certain contestants while being harsh on others throughout the season. Negi has provided clarity on how the host actually forms his perspectives before weekend episodes.
According to the producer, Khan makes genuine efforts to stay updated with the show’s proceedings. “Salman does try to catch episodes, obviously. If he is not able to watch, he watches an hour or two of footage with us on the weekend to go through all the big points that have happened in the house,” Negi explained. Beyond the curated footage, Khan also gathers information from his extensive network of viewers who regularly share their observations with him, ensuring he maintains a comprehensive understanding of the contestants and ongoing conflicts.
Addressing the “Earpiece” Conspiracy Theory
One of the most persistent theories circulating among Bigg Boss enthusiasts is that Khan is fed lines through an earpiece by production members, essentially making him a puppet of the makers. Negi decisively dismissed this widespread rumour, emphasizing the superstar’s strong-willed nature and autonomy.
“Whoever knows Salman Khan, it’s not possible to make him say anything that he doesn’t believe in, right?” the producer stated with confidence. This season, the production team has intentionally shifted towards a more collaborative approach rather than simply briefing the host with predetermined viewpoints. By ensuring Khan reviews footage himself and gains complete context before taking a stance on stage, the team provides him with the clarity needed to form independent judgments.
A More Transparent Process
Negi elaborated on the enhanced collaborative methodology adopted for Season 19. Rather than working with a top-down approach, the team now engages in thorough discussions and debates with Khan about specific incidents and contestant behaviours before episodes air. “He has his own point of view on whether that particular thing is right or wrong. We discuss, debate, and then we go on the floor,” Negi noted, indicating that the host’s stance emerges from genuine conviction rather than production directives.
The Salary Question Remains Confidential
The persistent speculation about Khan’s remuneration has become as much a talking point as his performance on the show. Reports suggest his annual compensation ranges between Rs 150 to Rs 200 crore per season, though the producer declined to confirm these specific figures.
“This contract is between him and JioHotstar, so I am not privy to that,” Negi responded diplomatically. However, he made his confidence in Khan’s value abundantly clear, saying, “But whatever the rumour is, whatever it is, he is worth every penny. For me, as long as he is there on my weekend, I am a happy person.”
Khan’s Deep Emotional Investment
Every season brings with it Khan’s periodic announcements about stepping away from hosting duties, often declaring it his final year with the show. Negi acknowledged that such moments have occurred in past seasons, with the host sometimes expressing genuine fatigue post-production.
Yet the producer believes the superstar’s current connection to Bigg Boss runs deeper than ever. “I think now even he has a huge emotional connection with this show,” Negi concluded, attributing Khan’s continued involvement and passionate on-stage interactions to genuine affection for the format rather than professional obligation alone. The producer’s confidence suggests that audiences can expect Khan to remain the face of Bigg Boss for seasons to come.
