Vishal Bhardwaj has finally put long-running rumours of a fallout with Shahid Kapoor to rest. Speaking at the trailer launch of their upcoming film O’Romeo in Mumbai, the filmmaker said the “rift” narrative has been overstated, and that what the public often reads as friction is simply creative exchange.

“We fight… but not the way it’s made out to be”

Addressing the chatter around their reported clashes during Rangoon, Bhardwaj acknowledged that disagreements happen—but insisted they have never damaged the partnership. “We also have many fights… but there aren’t that many fights between us,” he said, adding that their bond has matured into something enduring.

“A bond like Laxmikant–Pyarelal”

In a line that drew attention instantly, Bhardwaj compared his equation with Shahid to legendary creative duos: “We’ve formed a bond… like Laxmikant–Pyarelal, like Kalyanji–Anandji.”

He also poked fun at himself, calling himself difficult to work with, and joked that Shahid should get a National Award for managing him across four films.

Shahid: “An adventurous and crazy journey”

Standing alongside the director, Shahid recalled how their journey began with Kaminey and said he was initially intimidated, but grateful for the faith Bhardwaj placed in him. He also revealed a trivia point that lightened the room: the project first came to him through producer Sajid Nadiadwala, before Bhardwaj came fully on board.

Why this matters now

O’Romeo is the duo’s fourth collaboration after Kaminey, Haider and Rangoon—and the new film is being positioned as a gritty, massy underworld romance with a large ensemble.

Trade coverage also notes the film is loosely inspired by real people and events, adding to the intrigue around its world and characters.

Release date

O’Romeo is slated to release in theatres on February 13, 2026, on the eve of Valentine’s Day.

If the trailer is any indication, Bhardwaj–Shahid aren’t returning to “prove” anything—they’re returning because the chemistry still works.
