On June 19, 2025, at the 27th Shanghai International Film Festival, Chinese studios unveiled the “Kung Fu Movie Heritage Project: 100 Classics AI Revitalization Project,” a $13.9 million initiative to restore 100 iconic martial arts films using artificial intelligence. The project, backed by the China Film Foundation, aims to enhance visuals and sound for modern audiences while preserving the essence of classics like Bruce Lee’s Fist of Fury (1972) and Jackie Chan’s Drunken Master (1978). Additionally, A Better Tomorrow: Cyber Border, the world’s first fully AI-produced animated feature, reimagines John Woo’s 1986 classic in a cyberpunk setting, premiering at the festival.

Restoring a Cinematic Legacy

The initiative, led by Canxing Media and Quantum Animation, targets landmark films, including The Big Boss (1971), Once Upon a Time in China (1991) starring Jet Li, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000). AI will upscale image quality, enhance sound, and improve production values without altering original stories or characters, ensuring classics resonate with contemporary viewers. “AI is the brush, but creativity is the soul,” said Canxing Media chair Tian Ming, per Variety, emphasizing the project’s goal to preserve the “spiritual backbone” of Chinese martial arts cinema. Ten films are prioritized in the first phase, though specific titles remain unconfirmed.

A Better Tomorrow: Cyber Border

The festival showcased A Better Tomorrow: Cyber Border, a cyberpunk reimagining of John Woo’s A Better Tomorrow (1986), produced by just 30 people using a full-stack AI pipeline for scripting, modeling, animation, and rendering. Producer Zhang Qing noted, “AI has collapsed the barrier between creativity and execution,” reducing production from years to months, per sources. The animated feature, featuring digital versions of characters originally played by Chow Yun-fat, marks a bold step in AI-driven storytelling, with plans for gaming and VR expansions.

China’s AI-driven revival of 100 kung fu classics blends nostalgia with innovation, promising to bring Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan to new generations. While A Better Tomorrow: Cyber Border signals a tech-forward future, the project’s success hinges on balancing heritage with modernity.
