Chennai, Feb 27 (PTI) — Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Friday said political parties in Tamil Nadu have suggested holding the Assembly elections in a single phase, and a decision will be taken after considering all relevant factors.

He said the Election Commission’s decision regarding the number of phases for the polls will be known once the election schedule is announced. Kumar was addressing a press conference here.

Referring to the recently concluded Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu, he described it as a model for the country and termed it a great success.

The Chief Election Commissioner assured that necessary amenities would be provided at 75,000 polling stations across the state.

On the vote-counting process, he said mandatory VVPAT verification will be conducted. He added that even after counting is completed, any candidate can, within seven days and upon payment of the prescribed fee, request matching of EVM results with VVPAT slips.

Among the new initiatives, he said one major change is that postal ballots will be counted two rounds before the counting of EVM votes. (PTI)
