New Delhi, Dec 15 (PTI) — Delhi Police has stepped up security and imposed traffic restrictions in central parts of the national capital ahead of global football icon Lionel Messi’s visit, the final stop of his GOAT tour of India.
The Argentine star is scheduled to attend an event at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Monday between 1 pm and 4 pm. Authorities have tightened arrangements following chaos during his Kolkata visit, even as events in Hyderabad and Mumbai passed off smoothly.
Police said a multi-layered security plan has been put in place with a strong focus on crowd management, access control and traffic regulation. Multiple security rings have been established around the stadium, with deployment of additional police personnel and paramilitary forces. Entry is being allowed strictly on the basis of valid passes.
“Anti-sabotage checks, frisking points and extensive CCTV surveillance are part of the security plan,” a senior police officer said, adding that quick reaction teams, senior officers and emergency response units will remain on standby throughout the event.
Traffic police have identified designated parking areas for labelled vehicles, including P1 near Vikram Nagar. Vehicles without labels must be parked at Rajghat Powerhouse parking lot and Mata Sundari Lane, from where spectators can walk to the venue. App-based taxi users have been advised to get down at Rajghat Chowk and proceed on foot.
Parking around the Arun Jaitley Stadium has been prohibited, and vehicles found parked illegally will be towed and fined. Commuters have been urged to use public transport, with public movement expected to increase from around 11 am. Authorities have advised avoiding Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, ITO, Delhi Gate, Netaji Subhash Marg and Brijmohan Chowk from 10 am until the event concludes.
