Eric Dane

Eric Dane, the charismatic actor forever etched in television history as Dr. Mark Sloan (“McSteamy”) on Grey’s Anatomy, has died at the age of 53. His family confirmed the news on February 19, 2026, saying Dane passed away Thursday afternoon following a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Dane publicly revealed his ALS diagnosis in April 2025, after first experiencing symptoms in early 2024.

From McSteamy to Lasting Legacy

Dane joined Grey’s Anatomy in Season 2 (2006) as the confident, charming plastic surgeon Mark Sloan. The nickname “McSteamy” quickly turned him into one of the series’ most beloved characters. His chemistry with Sandra Oh, Jessica Capshaw, Chyler Leigh (Lexie Grey) and Sara Ramirez (Callie Torres) produced some of the show’s most iconic storylines and romantic moments. Sloan’s devastating death in Season 9 remains one of the most emotional exits in the series’ history.

Tributes

Tributes and condolence messages poured in across the Grey’s Anatomy community and the wider industry following the family’s statement.

A Battle with ALS

ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, causing loss of muscle control over time.

Eric Dane is survived by his wife Rebecca Gayheart, their daughters Billie Beatrice and Georgia Grace, and a worldwide audience that will forever remember him as the charming, flawed, deeply human Dr. Mark Sloan.

Rest in peace, Eric.
