Grammys Expand Recognition: Best Album Cover Category Returns After Decades

Grammys

The Recording Academy has revived the Best Album Cover category for the 2026 Grammys, after more than 50 years, honoring art directors’ creativity in the digital era. Announced on Nov 7, 2025, alongside Best Traditional Country Album, the revival marks the first dedicated album cover award since 1973.

The Return Breakdown: History, Rationale, and Debut

The category existed from 1959 to 1961 and 1969 to 1973, with early winners like Frank Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely. It merged into broader packaging awards afterward. CEO Harvey Mason Jr. explained, “In today’s digital world, album covers are arguably more impactful than ever.” The new award complements Best Recording Package, focusing on cover art’s design, illustration, photography, and graphics—often artist-directed portraits in the streaming age.

Inaugural Nominees: Artist-Driven Creativity

The 2026 nominees highlight self-directed visuals:

  1. CHROMAKOPIA (Tyler, the Creator) — Tyler Okonma, art director
  2. Debí Tirar Más Fotos (Bad Bunny) — Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, art director
  3. The Crux (Djo) — Multiple art directors including Joe Keery
  4. Glory (Perfume Genius) — Cody Critcheloe & Andrew J.S.
