Jakarta, Dec 22 (AP) — At least 16 people were killed after a passenger bus crashed on Indonesia’s main island of Java shortly after midnight on Monday, officials said.
The inter-province bus, carrying 34 passengers, lost control on a toll road in Central Java, slammed into a concrete barrier and overturned, according to Budiono, a chief of the National Search and Rescue Agency.
The bus was travelling from Jakarta to Yogyakarta when it overturned while entering a curved exit ramp on the Krapyak toll road in Semarang city.
“The forceful impact threw several passengers and left them trapped against the bus body,” Budiono said.
Police and rescue teams reached the scene about 40 minutes after the crash. Six passengers were declared dead at the site, while 10 others died en route to hospitals or during treatment, Budiono said.
Eighteen injured passengers were admitted to two nearby hospitals, including five in critical condition and 13 with serious injuries.
Television footage showed the yellow bus lying on its side, surrounded by rescue personnel, police and bystanders, as ambulances ferried the injured and the dead from the scene. (AP)
