Indore, Jan 2 (PTI) Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava on Friday said he has received reports of 10 deaths linked to a diarrhoea outbreak caused by contaminated water in the Bhagirathpura area.

Local residents, however, claimed 14 people, including a six-month-old infant, have died, though the health department has not confirmed this figure.

“According to health department data, four people have died due to the diarrhoea outbreak in Bhagirathpura. However, I have received information about 10 deaths due to this outbreak,” Bhargava told PTI.

When asked about suspected cholera based on preliminary tests of drinking water in Bhagirathpura, the mayor said only the health department could provide official details.

Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr Madhav Prasad Hasani said laboratory tests from a city medical college confirmed contamination in the locality’s drinking water due to a leakage in a pipeline. Administrative officials have avoided sharing full details.

Officials reported a leakage in the main drinking water pipeline near a police outpost in Bhagirathpura, at a spot over which a toilet has been constructed, which they said caused the contamination.

Over the past nine days, more than 1,400 people have fallen ill with vomiting and diarrhoea in the area. A health department official said that as of Thursday night, 272 patients were admitted to hospitals, with 71 discharged. Thirty-two of the 201 currently hospitalised patients are receiving treatment in intensive care units.
