Initiative to highlight Modi govt’s work will help BJP in Mumbai civic polls: Party leader

Mumbai, Jun 19 (PTI) A mass contact programme undertaken by the Mumbai BJP to highlight the work done during 11 years of the Narendra Modi-led central government will mobilise cadre and help the party in the coming civic polls, a legislator said on Thursday.

The month-long mass outreach programme is being held from June 5.

BJP MLA Parag Alavani told reporters that though the month-long organisational programme to highlight the performance of the Modi government is not directly election-related, the “mass contact outreach by the cadre will benefit the party in the civic polls,” likely to be held later this year.

The cash-rich Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had been ruled by the then undivided Shiv sena and BJP before they split.

In 2017, the BJP came close to unseating the Shiv Sena from the BMC despite the two parties being together in the state government.

Alavani said the BJP workers were holding booth-level meetings to make people aware of the work done by the Modi government.

”People voted for Narendra Modi as prime minister for the third consecutive time (in 2024) with trust, and it is the party’s turn to tell the people about the service, governance and welfare schemes for the poor,” the Vile Parle MLA said.

An exhibition detailing the government’s performance will be inaugurated on Friday by Mumbai Suburban Guardian Minister Ashish Shelar, who is also the city BJP chief, he said.

The BJP will hold booth-level programmes on the Yoga Day on June 21 and the death anniversary of Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee on June 23, Alavani said.

On June 25, the RSS and BJP workers who participated in protests against the imposition of Emergency in 1975 will be felicitated, he said.

On the BJP’s rivals in Maharashtra, Alavani said that for the first time, a political party won more than 100 seats in three consecutive assembly elections and the opposition should get a message by this poll verdict.

To a query about slum rehabilitation on the airport land in Mumbai, he said there are nearly 80,000 slums on the airport land and expressed hope that the in-situ rehabilitation policy of the Modi government will expedite the redevelopment.

The earlier governments at the Centre wanted the state government and the civic body to rehabilitate slum dwellers, and the decision of issuing tenders to developers, with 100 acre land, to shift the slum dwellers elsewhere didn’t work, the BJP leader said. PTI MR GK
