Jonathan Bailey announces an acting break to focus on LGBTQ+ advocacy

Jonathan Bailey

Jonathan Bailey, the star of Netflix’s Bridgerton and one of the busiest actors of the past three years, has decided to take a break from acting in 2025. In a candid conversation, Bailey admitted he has been working “solidly” and now wants to devote his energy to something bigger than showbiz — his LGBTQ+ non-profit, The Shameless Fund.

Why the Break?

Bailey has been unstoppable since 2020, starring in Bridgerton, Showtime’s Fellow Travelers, and blockbuster films like Jurassic World Rebirth and Wicked. But after this whirlwind, the actor says he needs balance.

“I’ve been working solidly for about three years now, which has been amazing and mind-blowing. But with everything happening in the world, I’m going to stop acting for a bit next year and just focus on the Shameless Fund,” Bailey explained.

He added that his priority in the coming months will be staffing and structuring the foundation properly.

What Is The Shameless Fund?

Bailey launched The Shameless Fund in June 2024 to support LGBTQ+ communities — a move he calls his proudest achievement.

  1. The fund tackles the shocking statistic that only 1p of every £100 raised in the UK goes to LGBTQ+ causes.
  2. It focuses on raising money through art, collaborations, and creative projects, instead of traditional fundraising.
  3. Bailey insists the real heroes are those on the ground — activists, organisations, and charities that fight daily battles for equality.

Career Highlights Before the Pause

Jonathan Bailey has built an enviable resume in a short span:

  1. Rose to global fame as Anthony Bridgerton in Shonda Rhimes’ Regency-era Netflix drama.
  2. Earned Emmy nominations for Fellow Travelers alongside Matt Bomer.
  3. Returned to the West End stage in 2022, showcasing his theatre roots.
  4. Starred in Jurassic World Rebirth, forming a strong bond with Scarlett Johansson.
  5. Played Fiyero in Wicked and its sequel, Wicked: For Good (releasing Nov. 21, 2025).

Despite this momentum, Bailey insists this is the right time to step back.

A Bold, Un-Hollywood Move

In an industry that thrives on constant visibility, Bailey’s decision feels like a rebellion. At the peak of his fame, instead of chasing roles and red carpets, he is walking away to invest in a cause that matters. It’s a stern reminder that sometimes, a real legacy is not built on awards but on impact.

Hollywood may lose one of its brightest stars for a while, but the LGBTQ+ community gains a powerful ally working full-time for change.

Moving Ahead

Jonathan Bailey’s break from acting is not a retreat but a redirection of energy. From Bridgerton ballrooms to global blockbusters, he has already conquered the screen. Now, his focus shifts to creating lasting social change with The Shameless Fund. Whether fans see him back on stage or screen soon, one thing is certain: Bailey’s next act might be his most important yet.
