Legendary playback singer Kumar Sanu has taken legal action against his ex-wife Rita Bhattacharya, filing a ₹30 lakh defamation suit in the Bombay High Court. The case, heard on December 17, 2025, stems from Bhattacharya’s viral September interviews where she accused Sanu of mistreating her during pregnancy—claiming he starved her, locked the kitchen, denied milk and medical care, and had extramarital affairs. Sanu alleges these statements breach a 2001 divorce consent clause prohibiting mutual public accusations.
The Trigger: Resurfaced Allegations
The interviews, aired on platforms like Viral Bhayani and Film Window, revisited their troubled marriage (1986-1994, divorce finalized 2001). They share three sons, including singer Jaan Kumar Sanu. Sanu’s lawyer, Sana Raees Khan, argued the claims caused “irreparable damage” to his reputation and mental health. A prior legal notice on September 27 demanded content removal and warned of criminal action under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Rita’s Shock and Counter-Response
Bhattacharya expressed shock, claiming the notice demanded ₹50 crore (higher than reported) and called it harassment against “the mother of his three sons.” She vowed to fight in court after 31 years, hinting at a counter-case: “If you can’t love us, don’t harass us.”
A Legacy in the Spotlight
Sanu, Guinness record holder for most songs in a day, has called the allegations “false and malicious.” The suit underscores post-divorce privacy, amid renewed attention from Bigg Boss mentions.
An Unfinished Symphony
Kumar Sanu’s legal step isn’t silence—it’s statement. As old echoes meet court, it reminds: Can past promises bind present words? The case affirms the ache of public legacies in private pain.
