Renowned Tamil filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj has expressed a strong inclination towards developing a sequel to his 2021 blockbuster Master, starring Thalapathy Vijay, over a follow-up to their 2023 collaboration, Leo. This revelation comes amidst Vijay’s impending full-time entry into politics, casting uncertainty over his future in cinema.

Kanagaraj‘s Vision: ‘Master 2’ Takes Precedence
In a recent interview with film critic Sudhir Srinivasan, Kanagaraj shared his creative aspirations, stating, “Only time can tell, and Vijay Anna has to decide. We can bring him in for a cameo, but I want to do Master with him. Everyone is waiting for Leo 2, but I want to do Master with him.”
He elaborated on his preference, highlighting the untapped potential in Master‘s narrative: “I think there’s a part of that story which remains untold. It’s there in the first one without any conclusion. I just want to do that film. I personally like the vibe of JD very much. Leo is a strong character and people love it, but if you personally ask me, I have a proper idea for Master 2 and he also knows it. But it’s all about timing – he now has other things he wants to achieve.”
Thalapathy Vijay’s Political Aspirations
Thalapathy Vijay has announced his intention to enter politics full-time after completing his current film commitments. He emphasized that politics, for him, is not just another profession but a sacred service to the people. Vijay expressed his intention to immerse himself fully in politics after honoring his commitments to the film industry, ensuring a smooth transition without disrupting party activities.
The Fate of ‘Leo 2’ and the LCU
Kanagaraj confirmed that Leo 2 is currently shelved due to Vijay’s political commitments. He stated, “I will be working next on Kaithi 2. I want to make a separate film on Rolex. And then I want to end the universe with Vikram 2. Had Vijay sir not announced his retirement, I would have made Leo 2 as well.”
The Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU), which began with Kaithi and expanded with Vikram and Leo, is set to conclude with these upcoming projects. Kanagaraj’s roadmap includes Kaithi 2, a standalone film on the character Rolex, and Vikram 2.
Upcoming Projects and Collaborations
Beyond the LCU, Kanagaraj is currently working on Coolie, starring Rajinikanth, set to release worldwide on August 14. He is also developing Irumbu Kai Maayavi, a high-budget drama with no guns or blood, and is in constant touch with actor Suriya regarding the project.
