Nagpur, Dec 8 (PTI) — The Maharashtra assembly began its winter session on Monday with the full recital of ‘Vande Mataram’, marking the 150th anniversary of the national song.
Usually, only the first two stanzas are recited, followed by the state song ‘Jai Jai Maharashtra Majha’. But Speaker Rahul Narwekar said the complete rendition was organised this time to honour the milestone. Legislators then stood and recited the full song.
The Lok Sabha also scheduled a 10-hour discussion on the 150th anniversary of ‘Vande Mataram’ on Monday, as part of nationwide year-long celebrations. The iconic poem, penned by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee and set to tune by Jadunath Bhattacharya, has been central to India’s freedom narrative.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently criticised the Congress for allegedly removing key stanzas from the song in 1937, calling it the “seed of partition.” On November 7, he launched the year-long commemorative events aimed at engaging youth and students with the song’s legacy.
During the session, Narwekar also announced presiding officers who will chair the House in his absence: Chainsukh Sancheti, Kishor Patil, Rahul Patil, Uttamrao Jankar, Ramdas Masram, Sameer Kunawar and Saroj Ahire.
