Chennai, Mar 16 (PTI) As the countdown to the 2026 Assembly elections begins, the buzz within the TVK has shifted to polling booths.
While Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party chief Vijay keeps his cards close to his chest, his cadres are already securing the perimeter of potential strongholds. The ground-level force is vocal about where their Thalapathy should plant the flag.
Sangeetha M pitched for her home district, Chengalpattu, where, according to her, people are suffering the most from drug abuse issues.
“I understand why most people would prefer a constituency where there are more fans for Thalapathy. But I feel fans are not going to decide the winner. It will be the people who are dying for a change,” the 39-year-old, who said she has been a fan of Vijay since she was 11 years old.
Sangeetha, who runs a tailor shop in Chromepet, said Chengalpattu has tried it with both the DMK and AIADMK, but to no avail.
“These two parties come to power, taking turns. But nothing really changes on the ground here in this constituency. Now, Chengalpattu people are keen on ground-level change. That is why I feel if Vijay contests here, he will win hands down,” said the party worker, who has been promised the joint secretary post by the party.
Two-wheeler showroom owner Vardarajan, originally from Kancheepuram, but now lives in Poonamallee, said it should be either Perambur or Virgumbakkam, or both. He believes these two constituencies have a heavy concentration of Vijay fans.
“We are not looking for a safe seat; we are looking for a statement,” the 37-year-old, who his currently lobbying for a post in the party, said.
Twenty-nine-year old Sandhya, a data entry operator, is convinced that Perambur and Tambaram will be the lucky charms for Thalapathy. “This is what I observed by talking to other fans and friends,” said Sandhya, who describes herself as a “crazy fan” who used to bunk classes even in school to watch Vijay’s first-day-first-shows.
Vellore district secretary R Velmurugan batted for Vijay’s “home ground” Virgumbakkam, as he feels that the heavy concentration of youth voters and a massive urban fan base would bridge the gap between cinema and politics.
“Perambur, too, has a good mix of fans and young voters,” he added.
Vignesh, 35, who has been promised the Chengalpattu district secretary post, said he would be “beyond happy” if his role model competes from Pallavaram, his home town.
“But yes, that would be my wishful thinking. Logically, I feel Thalapathy should compete from Madurai, our political capital. So far, it is where the roar was the loudest for him, with a massive turnout. That city is ready to crown him,” Vignesh added. PTI JR JR ROH
