Former cricketer-turned-politician and television personality Navjot Singh Sidhu has asserted that he played a central role in shaping comedian Kapil Sharma’s public persona. “Kapil came to me and said, ‘Paaji, I have a request. If you agree to be part of my show, they will give me an independent show,’” he recalled, naming Raj Nayak, then-head of Colors, as the executive behind the condition. The meeting took place over breakfast, and Sidhu promptly agreed.
Sidhu further disclosed that this intervention came at a crucial moment—Kapil had risen to fame through The Great Indian Laughter Challenge but had lost himself in the rigmarole of Comedy Circus, where he “didn’t have an identity” With Sidhu’s endorsement, Kapil was able to break free and launch his own platform.

Navjot Singh Sidhu first met Kapil Sharma in 2005 during The Great Indian Laughter Challenge, a show for which Sidhu was a judge. He revealed he even coined its name. At the time, Kapil, along with performers like Bharti Singh and Rajiv Thakur, was rising through the ranks.
Sidhu said Kapil later “gained stardom after appearing on Laughter Challenge.” Later, he was exploited in Comedy Circus; he lacked a personal identity.” The absence of a distinctive brand, Sidhu implied, made it critical for Kapil to stake his claim with an independent show.
Industry experts echoed this assessment—while Comedy Circus gave Kapil visibility, it failed to showcase his full potential. According to Sidhu, Kapil needed a stronger platform to emerge from the shadows of gimmicky formats.

Sidhu credited himself with shaping the very format of The Kapil Sharma Show. He shared:
“When I came, we didn’t have any guests. I suggested he bring Dharmendra on the show… it took the show’s TRP to another level.”
The legendary actor Dharmendra’s participation reportedly gave the show a blockbuster launch, helping set the tone for subsequent seasons. Sidhu’s inputs on sketches, guest selection, and presentation style significantly elevated the show’s mainstream appeal.
Sidhu’s Bigg Boss Stint: Money Motive Behind the Move

“I managed to return from the house without harming my reputation… it opened new doors for me.”
