Veteran actor Neena Gupta recently spoke about a defining conversation from her daughter Masaba Gupta’s early years—when Masaba briefly expressed a desire to become a Bollywood actress. In an interview with ANI, Neena revealed she chose honesty over blind encouragement, a moment she believes helped shape Masaba’s confidence and career direction.

Early Bollywood ambitions and an honest reality check

Masaba Gupta—today known for her work as a fashion designer—once dreamed of becoming a mainstream Hindi film heroine. Neena said the idea wasn’t part of a long-term plan, but was influenced by people around Masaba who were pursuing acting at the time.

Reflecting on that phase, Neena said she was frank about the rigid beauty standards Bollywood followed back then. “I told her, look, your face is like this, your body is like this. You won’t get the heroine of a Hindi film because you don’t look like that. It’s a fact,” Neena said. She added that her intention was not to hurt Masaba, but to ensure she understood the reality of how the industry worked.

Guidance, not rejection

While her words may sound harsh, Neena clarified that she wasn’t discouraging creativity or ambition. Instead, she urged Masaba to focus on learning the craft—suggesting acting lessons and exploring character roles where skill and performance matter more than conventional expectations.

Neena has often spoken about the value of self-awareness and honest guidance, especially in competitive spaces like entertainment—where external validation can shape young minds early.

Masaba’s journey: from fashion to the screen

Masaba went on to build a successful fashion label, House of Masaba, widely recognised for its bold prints and distinctive aesthetic. Although fashion remained her primary focus, she later stepped into acting on her own terms.

She made her acting debut with the Netflix series Masaba Masaba, where she played a fictionalised version of herself. Neena Gupta also starred in the show as her on-screen mother, adding a meta layer to their real-life relationship.

Neena said she was moved to tears after watching Masaba perform, praising her natural screen presence and ease in front of the camera. “She is such a good actor. She’s very natural… she was like a pro,” she said.

A lesson in truth and growth

Neena’s advice to Masaba reflects a blend of practicality and support—showing how uncomfortable truths can sometimes become a foundation for long-term success. Today, both mother and daughter are celebrated in their respective fields, proving that forging an individual path can lead to fulfilment beyond the “expected” route.
