Nikon Unveils Z Cinema ZR: A Compact Full-Frame Powerhouse

Nikon Unveils Z Cinema ZR {Nikon}

Nikon Corporation today unveiled the ZR, the newest addition to its Z CINEMA lineup. Positioned as the smallest full-frame camera in the series, the ZR combines Nikon’s opto-electronic heritage with imaging technologies from its subsidiary, RED Digital Cinema, Inc.

Targeted at filmmakers, high-end productions, and content creators, the Nikon ZR aims to deliver cinematic image quality in a compact form factor, ideal for both studio setups and nimble, single-operator shoots.

Cinematic Video Performance with RED’s DNA

At the heart of the ZR is a full-frame sensor supporting Nikon’s exclusive R3D NE codec based on RED’s R3D RAW standard, enabling in-camera recording of 12-bit RAW video at up to 6K/59.94 fps and 4K/119.88 fps at reduced resolution.

The camera features dual base ISOs: ISO 800 and ISO 6400, combined with a 15+-stop dynamic range, delivering rich detail in both highlights and shadows. It also supports Log3G10 and REDWideGamutRGB, ensuring color matching with RED cinema cameras and seamless integration into multi-camera workflows.

A new ‘Cinematic video’ mode and a suite of nine RED-approved Imaging Recipes (available via Nikon Imaging Cloud) make it easier than ever for content creators to achieve the classic RED look out of the box.

Leading and Listening Audio Capabilities

Nikon emphasizes the ZR’s standout audio strength: the world’s first interchangeable-lens camera offering 32-bit float audio recording on both built-in and external microphones.

Powered by Nokia’s OZO Audio, the built-in microphone includes three high-performance capsules with five selectable pickup patterns: Front (super directional), Front, All directions, Rear, and Stereo (binaural) for unmatched versatility, especially in vlogging, interviews, ambient sound, or immersive ASMR contexts.

Compact and Flexible Design

Despite packing a large 4-inch monitor, the ZR is lightweight, just 540 g for the body, estimated at 630 g with battery and media making it one of the most portable cinema-ready cameras in its class.

Thanks to the 16 mm flange focal distance of the Nikon Z-mount, the camera supports a broad range of lenses (including adapted types), increasing shooting flexibility.

Additional pro-level features include:

  1. Adjustable shutter angle (from 5.6° to 360°)
  2. Customizable waveform, histogram, zebra overlays
  3. Support for tally control via HDMI-CEC (up to six cameras)
  4. Durable, dust- and drip-resistant build
  5. Enhanced still-photo features inherited from the Z6III, plus a starscape preset for night skies.

RED Introduces V-RAPTOR XE: 8K Cinema Simplified

In a brief within the same announcement, RED Digital Cinema, Inc. also launched the V-RAPTOR XE, a streamlined version of its flagship V-RAPTOR [X] cinema camera, optimized for independent creators.

Retaining the 8K large-format global-shutter sensor from the V-RAPTOR [X], the V-RAPTOR XE provides the same cinematic image fidelity, dynamic range, and low-light capability at a more accessible price point.

ME-D10: A New Shotgun Mic Built for the ZR

To round out its professional audio offerings, Nikon also introduced the ME-D10 shotgun microphone. Designed for the ZR’s next-gen “digital accessory shoe,” the ME-D10 requires no battery or cable, thanks to its power delivery from the camera.

Its compact, shock-mounted form offers two audio capture modes:

  1. PURE: captures wide dynamic range with natural sound fidelity
  2. FOCUS: tailored for more directional audio capture.

Z CINEMA Connects on Social

To foster engagement with filmmakers and creators, Nikon also launched its official Z CINEMA Instagram account. Followers will receive timely updates on new products, events, and tips keeping the creative community connected and informed.

Final Word

With the launch of the ZR, Nikon delivers a compelling tool for cinematic storytelling, one that merges high-end video performance with innovative audio and a compact, flexible design. Bolstered by RED’s color science and codec expertise, Nikon’s latest cinema offering is poised to expand creative possibilities.

The ZR complements RED’s own V-RAPTOR XE, giving creators a spectrum of cinematic tools, whether they need the mobility of the ZR or the 8K performance of RED’s latest camera.

As Nikon continues to explore imaging innovation, the ZR may well be the creative spark that pushes the Z CINEMA series and the future of filmmaking into a new frame.
