No fuel shortage in TN, don’t panic: Oil companies

Chennai, Mar 14 (PTI) The state level coordinator of three major oil marketing companies on Saturday sought to allay fears of a fuel shortage in the state and urged the people not to believe rumours.

Indian Oil Corporation’s Executive Director and State Head for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry M Annadurai said the three terminals operated by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd and IndianOil Corporation Ltd, have sufficient stock of High Speed Diesel and Motor Spirit (Petrol), which would last for the next nine days.

“Besides, we are receiving regular supply of the petrol and diesel through rail wagons and pipelines. There is no shortage of fuel. Please do not panic. And do not believe in rumours (about shortage of fuel),” Annadurai, who is also the State Level Coordinators for the three Oil Marketing Companies (HPCL, BPCL and IOCL), told reporters.

Referring to reports of people thronging petrol outlets in Tamil Nadu, he said there has been a sharp surge in fuel consumption, a one hundred per cent increase in demand in the past few days.

“For example, if a person has been buying 1 litre petrol, he bought 2 litres of petrol that day. Due to panic over shortage, they have been buying in large quantities… they started flocking to petrol pumps over the last two days,” he told reporters.

However, the demand for petrol which stood at 100 per cent and 75 per cent for diesel on March 12, dropped to just 21 per cent and 20 per cent respectively, on March 13 (Friday).

“On Saturday, there has not been that much crowd in most of the petrol bunks. We have got adequate supply of fuel stock.” he added.

On supply of domestic LPG, he said the aim is to refill bookings can be made every 25 days in urban areas and every 45 days in rural areas.

On the commercial LPG, he said the Centre has said hospitals should be given priority followed by educational institutions like schools and colleges, which have hostels. PTI VIJ VIJ ROH
