In a recent interview, Abhishek Bachchan candidly shared how his entry into Bollywood was met with hesitation and rejection — not in spite of but because of his father’s towering legacy. Refugee was a turning point — but came after multiple rejections
Kareena Kapoor also debuted alongside him in 2000
Abhishek eventually debuted with JP Dutta’s Refugee, alongside Kareena Kapoor Khan. But the road leading there was difficult. He recalled attending several meetings with filmmakers who all, very politely, said “thanks, but no thanks.”
“When you’re 21, full of energy and zest, it’s hard to face that. You feel bad,” he admitted.
Abhishek acknowledged that while his situation was unique, rejection is a universal part of every actor’s journey.
The weight of Amitabh Bachchan’s legacy
According to Abhishek, the immense respect and emotional connection people have with his father often intimidated directors. Many felt launching him would come with unreasonable expectations and high stakes.
“He’s such an immense figure that people have so much love and respect for. I get it now.”
