The controversy surrounding Bollywood dancer-actress Nora Fatehi’s latest track, Sarke Chunar Teri Sarke, from the upcoming Kannada film KD: The Devil has escalated dramatically, with a religious body issuing a fatwa against her. The song, featuring Nora alongside veteran actor Sanjay Dutt, has faced intense backlash over its suggestive lyrics, bold choreography, and visuals, leading to widespread criticism, legal actions, and now religious condemnation.
The Escalating Backlash and Fatwa Issuance
The track, originally in Kannada as Sarse Ninna Seraga Sarse and adapted into Hindi as Sarke Chunar Teri Sarke, drew immediate flak upon release for its double-entendre lyrics and high-energy, provocative dance sequences. Social media users accused it of promoting vulgarity and objectifying women, with celebrities like Armaan Malik previously labeling similar content a “new low.”The situation intensified when the Muslim Personal Darul Ifta in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, issued a fatwa against Nora Fatehi.
Government and Institutional Actions
The controversy reached official levels with the central government reportedly banning the song, as confirmed in various reports. The National Commission for Women (NCW) summoned Nora Fatehi, Sanjay Dutt, and lyricist Raqueeb Alam over alleged obscenity. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued notices to relevant ministries and bodies, while complaints were filed with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) demanding a ban. Parliament discussions highlighted the issue, with the Information and Broadcasting Minister stating that freedom of expression is not absolute.
Nora Fatehi’s Response and Clarifications
Nora Fatehi has distanced herself from the Hindi version of the song. In a detailed Instagram video, she claimed she was “misled” about the lyrics, shot the original in Kannada without knowledge of the Hindi adaptation, and even warned the KD: The Devil makers about potential trouble. She alleged the use of AI or unauthorized changes and emphasized that she did not approve or perform the controversial Hindi lyrics. Earlier, during an Instagram Live, she had snapped at critics, calling a repeated questioner “stupid” and defending it as a dance number, not requiring sanctity like a bhajan.
