Netflix’s One Piece Season 2, starring Inaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy, wrapped filming in February 2025 in Cape Town, South Africa, with a release expected in late 2025, likely October–November, as confirmed during the May 31, 2025, Tudum event. The live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s iconic manga follows the Straw Hat Pirates’ journey through the Grand Line, covering arcs like Loguetown, Reverse Mountain, Whiskey Peak, Little Garden, and Drum Island. This season aims to deepen the narrative with new characters like Tony Tony Chopper, driven by Oda’s oversight to maintain fidelity to the source material.

New Arcs and Beloved Characters

Season 2 dives into the Arabasta arc, introducing the desert kingdom’s political turmoil and the Baroque Works syndicate, led by Joe Manganiello as Mr. 0 (Crocodile) and Lera Abova as Miss All-Sunday (Nico Robin). Charithra Chandran plays Miss Wednesday (Vivi), while Katey Sagal embodies Dr. Kureha, pivotal to the Drum Island arc where Chopper, the reindeer doctor, joins the crew. Other additions include David Dastmalchian (Mr. 3), Camrus Johnson (Mr. 5), Daniel Lasker (Mr. 9), and Callum Kerr (Smoker). Oda’s letter, shared via Netflix Tudum, praised the cast, saying, “Seeing them in person convinced me: They were absolutely the perfect choice!”

Production Challenges and Creative Vision

Filming faced delays due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, pushing production from September 2023 to June 2024. Co-showrunner Matt Owens stepped down in March 2025 for mental health reasons, leaving Joe Tracz to lead post-production, which includes extensive CGI for Chopper and desert settings. The season’s eight episodes aim to condense manga arcs while preserving emotional depth, with practical sets in South Africa enhancing the Grand Line’s diverse landscapes. X posts highlight fan excitement for Usopp’s sniper goggles and Crocus’ Twin Cape Lighthouse, spotted in behind-the-scenes clips.

High Expectations and Record-Breaking Buzz

Following Season 1’s global success, with 40 million views in two weeks, Season 2 broke a franchise record for the longest gap between seasons, surpassing the anime’s brief hiatuses. The May 2025 Osaka Comic Con, where 897 fans in Luffy hats earned a Guinness World Record, underscored the show’s cultural impact. With Season 3 reportedly in pre-production, Netflix aims to sustain momentum, potentially leading into Arabasta’s climax. One Piece Season 2 promises epic battles, heartfelt moments, and Chopper’s debut, setting sail for a legendary adventure.
