Padakkalam: A Supernatural Campus Comedy That Misses the Mark

padakkalam

Padakkalam,” directed by debutant Manu Swaraj, is a 2025 Malayalam-language film that attempts to blend campus life with supernatural elements. Despite its ambitious premise, the film struggles to deliver a cohesive narrative, resulting in a disjointed viewing experience.

Padakkalam: Plot Overview

The story centers around Jithin (Sandeep Pradeep), an engineering student who faces a sudden breakup with his classmate Jeevika (Niranjana Anoop). Amidst personal turmoil, Jithin and his friends—Ramzad (Arun Pradeep), Kannan (Saaf), and Nakul (Arun Ajikumar)—become entangled in campus politics when their department demands the replacement of the Head of Department (HOD) due to allegations of forged credentials.

The conflict intensifies as senior professor Shaji (Suraj Venjaramoodu) and the student-friendly Renjith (Sharafudheen) vie for the HOD position. After Shaji’s appointment, his erratic behavior leads the students to suspect supernatural interference, specifically body-swapping, orchestrated by Renjith. The narrative unfolds as the students investigate these suspicions, leading to a series of comedic and mysterious events.

Performances

Suraj Venjaramoodu and Sharafudheen deliver commendable performances, particularly in portraying the complexities of body-swapping scenarios. Their comedic timing and adaptability provide some of the film’s more engaging moments. However, the supporting cast, including the female leads, are underutilized, with characters like Jeevika and Shaji’s wife (Pooja Mohanraj) lacking depth and significant contribution to the plot.

Technical Aspects

The film’s cinematography by Anu Moothedath captures the campus setting effectively, while Rajesh Murugesan’s music adds a lively backdrop to the narrative. Editing by Nidhin Raj Arol maintains a steady pace, though it cannot compensate for the film’s structural weaknesses.

Critical Reception

Critics have noted that while “Padakkalam” introduces an intriguing concept, it falls short in execution. The film’s attempt to merge supernatural elements with campus comedy results in a narrative that lacks coherence and fails to fully engage the audience. The underdevelopment of key characters and reliance on clichéd tropes further detract from its potential.

“Padakkalam” aspires to offer a unique blend of genres but ultimately delivers a fragmented story that doesn’t fully capitalize on its creative premise. While the performances of the lead actors provide some entertainment, the film’s shortcomings in character development and narrative cohesion make it a less compelling watch. It serves as a reminder that innovative ideas require equally strong execution to resonate with audiences.
