New Delhi, Dec 19 (PTI): Parliament’s Winter Session concluded on Friday with both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha being adjourned sine die.

Lok Sabha was adjourned sine die by Speaker Om Birla soon after the House met for the day. The Rajya Sabha was also adjourned sine die, with Chairman C. P. Radhakrishnan reading out a synopsis of the legislative and other business transacted during the session. This was followed by the playing of the National Song, after which the Chair adjourned the House sine die.

The Winter Session began on December 1 and was held over 19 days, with 15 sittings. During the session, several key Bills were passed, including legislation to open up the civil nuclear sector for private companies.

Another Bill to replace the MGNREGA with a new law — the VB–G RAM G Bill — assuring 125 days of guaranteed employment for rural India, was passed on Thursday amid opposition protests, including tearing of papers.

The Lok Sabha also took up two debates — on 150 years of ‘Vande Mataram’ and electoral reforms — both of which witnessed a politically charged atmosphere. A Bill to set up a higher education regulator was referred to a joint committee of the two Houses. Another Bill on the market securities code was introduced and referred to a department-related standing committee for further examination.
