A Story of Espionage, Identity, and Betrayal

Based on the acclaimed graphic novel series by Arash Amel, Butterfly follows David Jung, a former U.S. intelligence operative now living a low-profile life in South Korea. But peace is short-lived as Jung becomes the target of Rebecca—a lethal young assassin played by Reina Hardesty, working under a mysterious and dangerous spy syndicate known as Caddis.

“Butterfly isn’t just about spycraft—it’s about identity, family, and choices that haunt you,” said co-creator Steph Cha in a press release.

Key Highlights from the Trailer

  • High-octane action blended with emotional, character-driven storytelling
  • Haunting past decisions resurfacing in the life of David Jung
  • An atmospheric South Korean setting full of political and personal intrigue
  • Fast-paced sequences choreographed with cinematic finesse

The trailer hints at psychological warfare as much as physical conflict, keeping viewers on edge.

Stellar Ensemble Cast and Crew

The series boasts a diverse international cast, including:

  • Park Hae-soo (Squid Game)
  • Kim Tae-hee, Kim Ji-hoon, Sean Dulake
  • Charles Parnell, Piper Perabo, Louis Landau, Nayoon Kim

Behind the scenes, Butterfly is helmed by Ken Woodruff (Gotham, The Mentalist) and Steph Cha as co-creators and showrunners. The first two episodes are directed by Kitao Sakurai, known for Bad Trip. The series is produced by Daniel Dae Kim’s own banner, 3AD.

Music Meets Espionage

Adding to the intrigue, the series features the track ‘What If’ by J-Hope (Jung Hoseok) from BTS, which plays in key moments and enhances the series’ emotional weight and intensity.

Strategic Global Release

Butterfly arrives at a time when audiences are increasingly drawn to international spy thrillers with culturally rich backdrops. Releasing just ahead of India’s Independence Day, the show is well-positioned to ride the current wave of geopolitical content popularity.

“With Butterfly, we are telling a universal story through a uniquely Korean lens,” said Kim in a recent interview.

Where and When to Watch

Butterfly premieres worldwide on August 13, 2025, exclusively on Prime Video, including Prime Video India. All six episodes will be available for binge-watching on release day.
