When Krrish hit theatres in 2006, Hrithik Roshan’s masked superhero look became instantly iconic — a symbol of India’s homegrown superhero saga. But behind the glamour lay a story of sweat, patience, and sheer creativity. Director Rakesh Roshan has now revealed that it took six months to design the iconic mask, which, surprisingly, was made of wax.
Yes, the very mask that became Hrithik’s superhero identity was fragile enough to melt within hours, forcing the team into extraordinary measures.
Designing a Mask That Defined an Era
Speaking during filmmaker Farah Khan’s vlog shoot at his Khandala mansion, Rakesh Roshan explained:
- The team spent six months testing designs to find one that matched Hrithik’s costume and on-screen persona.
- The mask was made of wax, which meant it could last only three to four hours before melting.
- To preserve the mask during filming, Roshan arranged an air-conditioned bus that ran 24/7.
“The mask was everything for the character,” Roshan stressed. “We couldn’t compromise. Every shot depended on it.”
Beyond the Mask: The Weight of a Superhero
It wasn’t just the mask that challenged Hrithik. The black superhero costume was extremely heavy, making action sequences physically exhausting. Between the melting wax and the sweltering lights, the making of Krrish was as much a test of endurance as it was of artistry.
Krrish: A Franchise That Refuses to Die
Released in 2006, Krrish became a blockbuster, turning Hrithik into India’s first true superhero on screen. The film featured Priyanka Chopra, Rekha, and Naseeruddin Shah, and followed Krishna Mehra’s journey to becoming Krrish.
- Krrish 3 continued the saga in 2013.
- In April 2025, Krrish 4 was officially announced.
- This time, Hrithik Roshan will not just star but also direct the film, marking his directorial debut.
- The film is produced by Yash Raj Films in collaboration with Rakesh Roshan.
While shooting schedules are yet to be revealed, expectations are sky-high — and fans are already speculating about what kind of mask and costume the superhero will don next.
Bollywood’s Most Underrated Risk
In a country where superheroes are usually imported from Hollywood, Krrish was a bold gamble that paid off. The mask wasn’t just a prop — it was a symbol that India could craft its own superhero mythology.
But here’s the spicy truth: if Krrish 4 doesn’t reinvent itself, it risks becoming a nostalgia act in a Marvel-saturated market. Hrithik’s decision to direct could either save the franchise — or bury it for good.
