Rani Mukerji has spoken about how a personal loss deepened her emotional connection to Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway (2023), the courtroom drama where she played a mother fighting to reunite with her children.

In an interview with Pinkvilla, the actor said the script reached her at a time when she was dealing with the loss of her second child, describing her “sense of loss” as overwhelming—and that the story stayed with her instantly.

Why the Timing Mattered

Rani noted that the film’s core emotion—a mother being separated from her child—felt especially close because of what she was experiencing then. She also spoke about wanting to reflect the loneliness and desperation of a parent whose child is taken away “right in front of her eyes.”

The Film’s Real-World Root

Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway is inspired by the real-life custody battle of Sagarika Chakraborty (portrayed as Debika Chatterjee in the film), bringing global attention to the emotional cost of cross-border custody disputes.

National Recognition

Rani’s performance went on to earn her the Best Actress honour at the 71st National Film Awards (for 2023 films).

Bottom line

This interview adds context to why the performance felt so lived-in: the film arrived when grief was still raw, and Rani says that emotional timing made the story impossible to ignore.
