Warner Bros. Discovery has confirmed that The Batman: Part II, starring Robert Pattinson and directed by Matt Reeves, is slated to enter production in spring 2026. The highly anticipated sequel has also received a new release date, set to hit theaters globally on October 1, 2027.
Production Timeline and Script Completion
According to India Today, the project marks a significant milestone: Matt Reeves has finally completed the sequel’s script, clearing the way for pre-production and filming to proceed. This aligns with a growing trend under DC Studios co-head James Gunn, who insists that major projects move forward only when a finalized screenplay is in place, setting a “script-first” approach that differs from other studios known to begin filming while still revising scripts.
Revised Release Date and Delays
Originally announced at CinemaCon in April 2022, the sequel was first given a release date in October 2025, under DC’s “Elseworlds” label. However, ongoing delays, including Hollywood labor strikes in 2023 and Reeves’s commitment to perfecting the script, pushed the date back to October 2, 2026, and then further to fall 2027.
This latest plan sees filming commencing in spring 2026, effectively a full year after the prior schedule, with the October 1, 2027 theatrical release remaining firmly set.
Support from DC Studios Leadership
James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, has publicly addressed the delays, urging fans to allow Reeves the time needed to develop the script properly. Gunn referenced examples of sequels with long gaps, including the seven years between Alien films, 14 years for The Incredibles, and 13 years for Avatar: The Way of Water, to provide context.
In a candid social media message, Gunn wrote, “Let the guy write the screenplay in the amount of time he needs to write it… He doesn’t owe you something because you liked his movie”a pointed defense of Reeves against impatient online fandom.
Pre-Production Momentum
With the script in hand, pre-production is gaining momentum. Reports indicate that Warner Bros. is ramping up operations at Leavesden Studios near London, where the first film was shot, organizing departments for set design, costuming, stunt work, cinematography, VFX, and more.
Colin Farrell is confirmed to reprise his role as The Penguin, alongside returning cast members such as Andy Serkis (Alfred Pennyworth) and Jeffrey Wright (James Gordon), though rumors about additional villains like Hush have been firmly dismissed by Gunn.
Broader DC Studios Slate
The scheduling of The Batman: Part II plays into a larger strategy by DC Studios. A shareholder letter from Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav unveiled a 10-year roadmap, including upcoming films like Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (2026), Clayface (2026), and the next Wonder Woman, plus TV projects such as Peacemaker Season 2 and Lanterns.
This carefully curated slate underscores a unified effort across DC’s film and television content, separating Matt Reeves’s alternate Batman universe under the “Elseworlds” label from the larger DC Universe (DCU) being overseen by Gunn and Peter Safran.
Looking Ahead
As fans await filming next spring, expectations are high for Pattinson’s return as the darker, younger Bruce Wayne. With Reeves’s script completed and production gears turning, the path now looks clear for a 2027 premiere, five years after the 2022 original, promising a grounded, atmospheric follow-up that reflects the care of its creators.
In the era of cinematic universes built on speed, Reeves and DC Studios are emphasizing quality and encouraging audiences to be patient. After all, The Batman: Part II won’t appear overnight, but sometime in October 2027 and with Reeves at the helm, fans may well find that the wait was worth it.
