Kyiv, Nov 29 (AP) — Russian drone and missile attacks on the Ukrainian capital early Saturday killed two people, local officials confirmed, as fresh diplomatic efforts to end the war appear to be accelerating.
The Kyiv City Military Administration said on Telegram that two people died in the strikes. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that 15 others were injured, noting that debris from intercepted drones hit residential buildings. Parts of western Kyiv also experienced power outages following the attack.
The assault comes just ahead of a second round of peace discussions between Ukrainian and US negotiators, set to take place in America this weekend. A senior official in Ukraine’s presidential administration, speaking anonymously due to the sensitivity of the talks, said a US delegation is also expected to visit Moscow next week for discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The renewed diplomatic push follows US President Donald Trump’s updated 28-point peace proposal released last week. The plan, widely seen as favourable to Russia, prompted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to quickly engage with American officials. European leaders, concerned about the broader implications of Russian aggression, have been working to ensure their security interests are included in the negotiations.
Trump said Tuesday that the plan had been further “fine-tuned.” He announced that envoy Steve Witkoff would meet Putin in Moscow, while Army Secretary Dan Driscoll would meet Ukrainian officials. Trump added that he may meet both Putin and Zelenskyy once sufficient progress has been made.
In a significant political development, Zelenskyy on Friday accepted the resignation of his influential chief of staff and lead negotiator, Andrii Yermak. The move came after anti-corruption investigators searched Yermak’s residence — an unprecedented action that threatens to disrupt Kyiv’s negotiation strategy at a time when the US is pressing for a peace deal.
