The highly anticipated biopic on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, starring Shahid Kapoor and directed by OMG 2 filmmaker Amit Rai, has officially been shelved. In a candid and emotional revelation, Rai confirmed the film’s cancellation, pointing to systemic dysfunction in the Indian film industry as the main reason for the project’s downfall.

Five Years of Work Gone in Minutes

In an interview with Mid-Day, Rai lamented how years of research and passion could be dismissed in a matter of moments. He said,

“You live with a story for five years, and within minutes, somebody writes a five-pager pointing out what’s right and what’s wrong in the film.”

Despite the massive success of OMG 2 (₹180 crore worldwide), Rai expressed frustration that commercial success alone wasn’t enough to secure support for a story of national significance.

Industry’s Flawed System Under Fire

Rai minced no words when speaking about the challenges faced during production planning. He criticised entrenched issues related to casting, star management, and the prioritization of box office over meaningful content.

“The system is so cruel. Even if you’ve proven yourself, the process doesn’t support you,” Rai said.

Rai Shifts Focus to Independent Production

Refusing to let setbacks hold him back, Rai announced that he is moving ahead with his next project independently. He plans to collaborate with:

  • Márta Herbai, renowned Hungarian cinematographer
  • Isaac Hamon, action and motion-capture specialist

The project is expected to involve OMG 2 actor Pankaj Tripathi, with Akshay Kumar also showing interest in reuniting with the director.

“Very few actors were honest with me. Many didn’t want to be part of a film that spoke the truth about society,” Rai added, hinting at the lack of courage among some stars.

Shahid Kapoor’s Line-up Remains Busy

While this grand historical film has been shelved, Shahid Kapoor’s calendar remains packed. He was last seen in Deva opposite Pooja Hegde. He is reportedly in talks for a sequel to the 2012 film Cocktail, with names like Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna linked to the project.

Moving Ahead

The shelving of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj biopic comes as a significant loss to cinematic storytelling in India. The film promised a deeper, more authentic portrayal of a legendary figure in Indian history. However, the project’s demise reflects deeper flaws in the industry’s structure—where even talent and past success may not be enough to see a visionary story through.
