Hyderabad, Mar 11 (PTI) The shortage of commercial LPG cylinders has severely impacted hotels in the city, with about 30 per cent of establishments likely to shut down in a day and about 75 per cent in two days if the situation continued, industry representatives said on Wednesday.

The Telangana IT Corridor Hostels’ Association advised the hostel owners to cut down menus by avoiding items like chapati, dosa, and puri, which are time-consuming or require a lot of oil for preparation in view of the unavailability of commercial cylinders.

Hyderabad Hotels Association president Ashok Reddy said the shortage of commercial cylinders is severe and some small hotels are trying to manage the situation by using induction stoves and wood as fuel.

However, these measures are not possible for even 20 per cent of hotels as many are located on upper floors of multi-story buildings, he said.

Cases of black marketing of cylinders have also been heard, he said.

“Hotel owners are fearing a covid-like situation. They face the question of how to feed the staff. During the COVID pandemic, at least gas was available. They cannot remove the staff if the hotel is closed,” he told PTI.

Asked if hotels might close operations, he said about 25-30 per cent of hotels in the city may close by Thursday and about 75 per cent may shut in another two days.

The shortage would also hit caterers, roadside eateries and the eateries in malls and cinema theatres, he added.

The hotel owners are planning to meet Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy for a way out.

The Telangana IT Corridor Hostels’ Association General Secretary Tata Karunakar said supply of commercial LPG cylinders to hostels has been stopped since Tuesday.

As per the circular issued by the Association, hostels may stop serving tea, coffee, some curries and extra food items temporarily.

The association requested the hostel owners to adopt alternative cooking methods and infrom the guests about the situation.

He noted that there are around 11,000 hostels in Hyderabad, housing 10 lakh residents.

The association also urged the central and state governments to recognise the hostel sector as a priority sector and make appropriate alternative arrangements to ensure adequate gas supply. PTI SJR VVK GDK SJR ROH
