Prime Video has officially announced that Songs of Paradise, a much-anticipated musical drama inspired by the iconic life of Kashmiri singer Raj Begum, will premiere on August 29, 2025. The news comes alongside the reveal of the film’s motion posters and first looks, building excitement among fans of Indian cinema and OTT content.
A Biopic Rooted in Courage and Melody
The film pays heartfelt tribute to Raj Begum, often dubbed the ‘Melody Queen of Kashmir’ who became the first female voice at Radio Kashmir and made a mark as a trailblazing playback singer in a conservative milieu. Her journey from singing at local weddings to becoming a cultural icon embodies resilience and pioneering spirit.
Inspired by this extraordinary narrative, Songs of Paradise aims to chronicle Begum’s career trajectory, from early struggles to widespread acclaim, set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Kashmir Valley.
Dual Portrayal: Two Phases of a Legend
Saba Azad and Soni Razdan take on the mantle of the protagonist, portraying her at different stages of life, Azad embodies the younger Noor (Raj Begum), while Razdan represents her in later years. This dual casting promises to offer a layered and emotionally resonant depiction of Begum’s life, from hope-filled beginnings to reflective maturity.
The supporting cast includes notable names like Zain Khan Durrani, Sheeba Chaddha, Taaruk Raina, and Lillete Dubey, each contributing to the film’s compelling ensemble.
Vision Behind the Camera
Directed by Danish Renzu, a Kashmir-born filmmaker educated at UCLA, the film is imbued with a personal connection to the region’s cultural pulse. Renzu’s past works Half Widow and The Illegal have been praised for their emotional depth and socially conscious storytelling. He describes Songs of Paradise as an “emotionally stirring story” that celebrates Raj Begum’s legacy and her determination to follow her dreams in a restrictive era.
Co-written with Niranjan Iyengar and Sunayana Kachroo, the narrative promises to blend musical poetry with social commentary, capturing both ambiance and emotion.
Backing by Industry Heavyweights
The film is presented by Excel Entertainment, with production credits shared among Apple Tree Pictures Production and Renzu Films Production, showing a robust collaborative effort.
Ritesh Sidhwani of Excel Entertainment calls Songs of Paradise a “timeless tale” rooted in Kashmir’s rich heritage, capturing the essence of Begum’s voice that “made her the pride of the region” and continues to inspire future generations.
Manish Menghani, Director and Head of Content Licensing at Prime Video India, underscores the platform’s commitment to “stories that inspire and entertain” emphasizing how Songs of Paradise brings a lesser-known cultural saga to global viewership.
Cultural Resonance and Global Reach
The story of Raj Begum transcends mere biography; it embodies the struggle for female expression within restrictive societal norms. The film’s narrative of defiance and artistry promises to shine a light on the courage it took for women to stand up and be heard, especially in a community like Kashmir.
With the streaming reach of Prime Video, her story is poised to resonate not just within India but with global audiences, amplifying Kashmir’s musical legacy through an accessible and engaging medium.
