Agartala, Jan 13 (PTI) The family of Anjel Chakma, a native of Tripura who was killed in Dehradun in an alleged racial attack, has sought a CBI probe into the case.
Anjel, an MBA student from Tripura’s Pecharthal area, died after a fatal attack on December 9, which his family has alleged was racially motivated.
Anjel’s father, Tarun Kanti Chakma, met Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Debbarma in Agartala on Monday and raised the demand for a CBI investigation. Chakma, a BSF jawan currently posted in Manipur, said that more than a month has passed since his son’s death but the family has received no clear update on the progress of the case.
“We heard that five persons have been arrested, but the prime accused is still absconding. My family wants a CBI probe into the murder to ensure speedy justice,” he said.
He also urged the government to provide him with a posting in Delhi so that he can pursue the case more effectively. “I have sought support from the ‘maharaja’ (Debbarma) in the battle for justice, and he assured me of all possible support,” Chakma added.
Debbarma said he has been in touch with Anjel’s family since the incident took place in Dehradun. “Despite the gruesome nature of the incident, the police registered an FIR three days later,” he alleged.
Calling Anjel a “promising 24-year-old”, Debbarma said the case highlighted a larger issue. “Today, he has become a victim of racial violence, and tomorrow another person could meet the same fate. We must all fight for justice, irrespective of political beliefs,” he said.
Stating that the country does not belong only to “similar-looking people”, the scion of the former royal family said he would do everything possible to ensure justice for Anjel Chakma’s family. PTI
