Actor-director Farhan Akhtar, celebrated for his multifaceted contributions to Indian cinema, has finally broken his silence on the critical remarks once made by veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah. The comments from Shah, voiced years ago, had stirred much discussion among cinephiles; now, Farhan has explained why he chose not to initiate any personal outreach afterward.

Constructive Critique Vs. Public Statement

In an interview with Galatta Plus, Farhan detailed his philosophy on offering feedback in creative industries. “If there is something in their work that I feel… this could be better… I would pick up the phone and call them,” he said, stressing that such exchanges must be rooted in care and sensitivity.

However, when it came to Naseeruddin Shah’s comments, which Farhan perceived as lacking in respect and constructive intent, the dynamic shifted. “It felt like a statement thrown out publicly… I felt that then this person doesn’t respect you, so why should I reach out to a person who doesn’t respect me?” he explained.

Shared History, But No Personal Dialogue

Adding context to his decision, Farhan recalled their shared history: their collaboration in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobaraa, and Shah’s familiarity not just with him but also with his parents, Javed Akhtar and Shabana Azmi. “It would have been the easiest thing for him to say… ‘I want to speak to you, why don’t you come over!’” he asserted, implying that the absence of such an approach spoke volumes.

Back to the Source: Shah’s Original Remarks

For context, back in 2013, during an interview with The Times of India, Naseeruddin Shah had said, “Farhan Akhtar’s films I clearly don’t care for. I liked his first film, ‘Dil Chahta Hai’… I’m not a great fan of his acting or his films. But I admire him.” This candid, somewhat mixed criticism had since become a talking point in Bollywood circles.

Professional Integrity Meets Emotional Response

Farhan’s reflections underscore a broader principle: critique, to be meaningful and worthwhile, must stem from empathy and respect. He commented, “it has to be done with a certain degree of love, and a certain degree of respect for the other person.” His response thus becomes not just personal but emblematic of how creative professionals navigate criticism.

Looking Ahead

Farhan Akhtar, son of distinguished screenwriter Javed Akhtar and actress-activist Shabana Azmi, began his journey in cinema as an assistant director. He went on to direct defining films like Dil Chahta Hai, Lakshya, and Don, and has acted in Rock On!, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, and Dil Dhadakne Do. His next project, 120 Bahadur, further reflects his artistic versatility and evolving career.

With restraint and clarity, Farhan Akhtar has articulated why he did not pursue a conversation following Naseeruddin Shah’s remarks, citing a deficit in respect and caring intent. For Farhan, creative discourse is valuable only when grounded in empathy, not criticism for criticism’s sake.
