Munger, Aug 21 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday asserted that the INDIA bloc will not allow the BJP to “snatch” voting rights of the people of Bihar in collusion with the Election Commission.
Addressing a rally here on the fifth day of Congress’ ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ amid heavy rain, Gandhi said “vote chori” (vote theft) is an attack on the Constitution.
“The BJP is indulging in ‘vote chori’ through the EC by starting the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. The INDIA bloc will not allow the BJP to steal the voting rights of people,” the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha said.
Gandhi also claimed that the results of the last Lok Sabha polls were manipulated by the saffron party, and that the EC added “one lakh forged voters in the Bangalore central seat”.
“The prime minister is also a ‘vote ‘chor’, and the BJP is trying to snatch people’s voting rights to benefit a section of industrialists… The youth of Bihar want employment opportunities in their own state,” the former Congress president said, standing atop an open vehicle amid a downpour.
Gandhi had flagged off the ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ at Sasaram on Sunday in the presence of leaders like AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge and RJD supremo Lalu Prasad.
The Congress leader, who returned to the state after a day-long break, joined the Yatra in Lakhisarai district, hours after the second leg was kicked off by his ally Tejashwi Yadav of the RJD in adjoining Sheikhpura.
Earlier in the day, Gandhi had alleged that the current government was formed through “stolen votes” and urged people to choose a dispensation that is “truly yours, takes responsibility and is accountable to you”.
In a post on X, he shared a five-minute video of him conversing with the youth of Aurangabad in poll-bound Bihar during his ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’, and said people must use the power of their votes to protect Mother India and the Constitution.
Gandhi asserted that a clean voter list is the cornerstone of free and fair elections and asked the people of Bihar not to let their voting rights slip away, as all their other rights rest on this very foundation. PTI PKD RBT
