In a significant update for fans of the DC Universe, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has officially confirmed that a third Wonder Woman film is in development. Revealed during a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn emphasized that while the project is progressing at a measured pace, it is actively in motion.

“We’re working on Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman’s being written right now,” he told EW.

This development marks the first official word on a new Wonder Woman feature since the previously planned sequel, starring Gal Gadot and directed by Patty Jenkins, was shelved after Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios leadership.

Script Currently Underway Amid Studio Transition

Gunn described the project as a “slow-moving, but it’s moving” component of the revamped DC slate. The confirmation comes as part of a broader strategic shift by Warner Bros. Discovery—and DC Studios—under David Zaslav’s direction, focusing on a refreshed era of DC heroes, including Superman, Batman, Supergirl, and now, Wonder Woman.

Superman is next in line for release on July 11, 2025, followed by Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, set for June 2026. Meanwhile, long-planned iterations like the Paradise Island series continue development, though at a more deliberate pace.

Won’t Be Tied to Paradise Island Series

Gunn took care to clarify that the forthcoming Wonder Woman film is a standalone project separate from Paradise Island, the HBO Max series centered on the origins and politics of Themyscira (Paradise Island), which Gunn described as “slow moving” but ongoing.

“Wonder Woman’s a separate thing,” is how Gunn put it, underscoring how DC Studios is aiming to allow both the big-screen film and television series to develop on independent paths.

The Paradise Island series, initially announced in 2023 as part of the Gods and Monsters phase, promises a tone likened to Game of Thrones, exploring Amazonian culture and politics. But its deliberate pacing suggests DC Studios is taking a patient approach across different media formats.

Gal Gadot’s Return Uncertain, Casting Yet to Begin

While acknowledging Gal Gadot’s integral role in previous Wonder Woman films, Gunn has not confirmed whether she will reprise the role in this new iteration.

Gadot’s initial involvement was reinforced during an August 2023 press tour, where she mentioned discussions with Gunn and Safran, stating they told her, “We’re going to develop Wonder Woman 3 with you. You’ve got nothing to worry about.” But since then, Gunn’s emphasis has shifted to starting afresh: “We’re yet to cast the role.”

This marks a distinct break from the earlier phase: the previous sequel—Wonder Woman 3 under Patty Jenkins—was canceled after Gunn and Safran took charge to reboot the DC Universe.

Part of DC’s “Anchors” Strategy

DC Studios continues to emphasize its “Big Four” heroes—Batman, Superman, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman—as foundational pillars of their future cinematic universe.

Gunn noted that while they’re solid on Superman and Batman, “we’re dealing with the other two”—hinting at ongoing efforts to define the direction and creative leadership for those high-profile IPs.

The releases of Superman and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow are seen as laying the groundwork for later films, including the refreshed Wonder Woman, which will define what he describes as “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters” in the new DC Universe.

Industry Context and Fan Speculation

Wonder Woman 1984, directed by Patty Jenkins and starring Gal Gadot, earned moderate box office success but received mixed critical reviews. Its 2020 release grossed around $169.6 million worldwide on a $200 million budget. That film, along with Gadot’s multiple cameos in other DC projects, elevated her to a central role in the DC Extended Universe.

Despite that legacy, Gunn’s decision to begin from scratch reflects DC Studios’ overall intent: “witness a unified universe that balances character depth and broader narrative arc,” as seen with Superman.

Fan conversations online—including on Reddit—have already begun debating potential new actresses and directions for Diana Prince. Some speculate on casting tall, imposing actors like Gwendoline Christie or wrestler-turned-actor possibilities.

What’s Next: Timeline & Expectations

At present, Wonder Woman 3 is officially in active development, with the script in progress and no planned release date—as James Gunn describes it, things are moving “slowly, but moving.” Pre-production tasks, like assembling a creative team and casting, have yet to begin.

Ahead of Superman’s release in July, DC Studios is expected to offer further clarity on its strategy for Wonder Woman, potentially at Comic-Con or through press releases later this year.
