Spiritual Significance and Teachings

Yarchos Chenmo, meaning “Great Summer Teaching,” is a centuries-old tradition rooted in Tibetan Buddhism’s Gelugpa sect, held at Karsha, Zanskar’s largest monastery, founded in the 10th century by Phagspa Shesrab, per en.wikipedia.org. On July 25, 2025, the Dalai Lama delivered teachings on compassion, dependent origination, the Four Noble Truths, emptiness, and the Bodhisattva path, described by attendees as an “Ocean of Peace,” . A Great Summer Debate, inaugurated on July 21, engaged monks, nuns, and students from 27 schools in logic and reasoning, reflecting the Dalai Lama’s emphasis on study over blind faith.

Cultural and Regional Impact

Karsha Monastery, perched above Padum Valley, is a cultural beacon, housing 500-year-old frescoes and relics of Dorje Rinchen. The gathering, attended by figures like Khandu, who called it “deeply humbling,” reinforces Himalayan Buddhist ties. With 90 monks in residence, Karsha’s annual events, like the January Gustor festival, sustain Zanskar’s spiritual heritage. The 2025 Yarchos Chenmo, blessed by clear skies after weather delays, united diverse communities, promoting peace.

Challenges and Future Outlook

Logistical challenges, including a two-day helicopter delay for the Dalai Lama due to weather, underscore Zanskar’s remote terrain. As Ladakh transitions Zanskar into a separate district by 2028, preserving such gatherings amid modernization is vital.
