Lakhimpur Kheri, Oct 27 (PTI) — Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday announced that his government will move a proposal to rename Mustafabad village in Lakhimpur Kheri district as ‘Kabirdham’, saying the move will restore the area’s cultural and spiritual identity linked to Sant Kabir.
Speaking at the “Smriti Mahotsav Mela 2025”, Adityanath said the renaming aligns with his government’s efforts to restore traditional names of places altered by past rulers.
“When I asked about this village, I was told its name is Mustafabad. I asked how many Muslims live here, and I was told there are none. Then I said the name should be changed — it should be called Kabirdham,” he told the gathering.
The chief minister said a formal proposal will be brought forward soon. “This is about restoring the honour of a place associated with Sant Kabir’s legacy,” he added.
Referring to past initiatives, Adityanath said, “Those who ruled earlier renamed Ayodhya as Faizabad, Prayagraj as Allahabad, and Kabirdham as Mustafabad. Our government is reversing that — restoring Ayodhya, restoring Prayagraj, and now reviving Kabirdham.”
He said the BJP’s double-engine government is committed to developing and beautifying all places of faith across Uttar Pradesh. “Every pilgrimage site should be beautified, and facilities for devotees improved through tourism and culture departments,” he said.
Adityanath also said public funds are now used for religious and cultural rejuvenation, not “constructing boundary walls of kabristan (graveyards).”
Calling the move a mark of civilisational pride, he said, “This is about reviving the glory of places that reflect India’s spiritual and cultural roots.”
